An Analysis of Decorative Stone Arrowhead Symbols in Petroglyphs of Seokjang-dong, Gyeongju, Korea - With Regard to Ancestor Worship -
Numerous dolmens from the Bronze Age are scattered around the Yeongilman Bay in Korea, where the Kuroshio Current of the south and the Liman Current of the north merge. Petroglyphs surround the bay as well, particularly in the coastal area of Chilpo-ri, Heunghae-eup, in Pohang and the Hyeongsangang River in Seokjang-dong, Gyeongju-si. Yeongilman Bay’s petroglyphs include unique symbols such as stone swords symbols (石劍文), stone arrowhead symbols (石鏃文), and hilt-shaped symbols (劍把形文). Stone arrowhead and sword symbols are seen in many dolmen petroglyphs because they were the most commonly buried items in dolmens. Dolmens around the Yeongilman Bay represent the decorative stone sword culture (裝飾石劍文化) and the cup-mark culture, which entail the creation of holes in the hilts of polished stone swords and the cover stones of dolmens, respectively. The merge between the aforementioned cultures and the petroglyph culture, which spread through sea routes from the Amur River in Yunhaju, resulted in the dolmen petroglyphs. The petroglyphs in Seokjang-dong, Gyeongju, include isosceles triangle-shaped stone arrowhead symbols decorated with diagonal lines as well as figures and faces seemingly depicting ancestral statues. Its resemblance with Sakachi-Aryan petroglyphs, which also include face images and diagonal lines, suggests that the Seokjang-dong petroglyphs were used as an altar for ancestor worship.
